Ask Me Why- Krystal McGee
Krystal McGee has been the Branch Executive Director for the Wilson Family YMCA since June 2013. Beginning at a young age after a softball game, her love for recreation and fitness grew into her passion today for the Y and its cause.
“At 7 years old I began playing softball and during my times at the field I was drawn to the recreation director. His job seemed fun and I loved being at the ball park so I asked him if I could come out to the field and help “clean up or something”. He invited me to help pick up trash at the park the next Saturday morning. From that point on, I was committed to a career in recreation.
After graduating from college. I was fortunate enough to get the opportunity to work with the Army’s Morale, Welfare and Recreation Directorate (MWR) and the Army’s Physical Fitness School.
In 2001, I moved to Fort Stewart, GA and stumbled in the YMCA looking for a job in recreation. Out current Family YMCA of Augusta CEO, Danny McConnell, was the COO there, hired me as the sports director. It was inspiring to be able to share my faith and come to work to “play” everyday. After 3 years there, I was promoted to branch director there and my love for the Y grew stronger. However, my family ended up moving to Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri and I returned back to work for MWR. It was an incredible honor and privilege to develop and oversee recreation programs for soldiers and their families for the 8 years I was with MWR.
""The Y is so much more to me because every day I get to opportunity to help someone realize their potential, to help someone change their perspective on life, to help someone have a better day."
I passionately believe that the Y is here to strengthen our community and I’m completely committed to out cause one person at a time. I get to wake up every morning knowing I get to be a part of something that can change someone’s life in a positive way.”
