The Family Y of Greater Augusta

Ask Me Why- Marisa Powell

Marisa Powell is one of the Family YMCA of Greater Augusta’s Membership Recovery Specialists. The YMCA was a part of her life as a teenager, but means even more to her now after hitting a low point in her life.

“After 13 years of marriage, I went through a divorce and went into a deep depression. I became a severe alcohol/ drug addict. I lost everything. After 4 months in recovery, the Family YMCA of Augusta South hired me as a Kids Watch staff member, and I've since been promoted to my current position as a Membership Recovery Specialist.

The Y has played a big part in my recovery -it doesn't matter what you've done or what you've been through. I'm not embarrassed to share my story because that's what the Y is all about. The atmosphere of the people I come to work with every day is an ongoing part of my recovery...the Y is full of positive people and it's been a great help to me.

I came from nothing before I was hired at the South Augusta branch, and because of the Y I've been able to rebuild my life and share my story with others and support them. That's what we're here for-to build community with our members. I enjoy my job so much, I find myself volunteering for events that I don't have to be there for necessarily! It doesn't matter if you have anything or everything, that's why we're here at the Y. I'm so grateful to the Family Y for welcoming me, even at my lowest point in my life. “
