Ask Me Why – Larry Lynn

During Volunteer Appreciation Month in April, the Family YMCA celebrates the dedication of its 1,500+ volunteers who believe in its cause of strengthening community. Larry Lynn is a long-time volunteer who sets the pace in his energy and devotion to helping others be healthy and be a part of the life-strengthening programs of the Y.

“The Y is such a great cause and there’s so many great things that the Family Y does for people here in town,” Larry said.

Larry and his wife, Rosemary, own Allegra Printing in Martinez, so he feels a strong commitment to the Marshall Family YMCA in Columbia County. He served as the Chairman of the Marshall Family YMCA Board, a position that allowed him to have an impact on his own community and to influence people through his actions. In his leadership role on the Board and as an Annual Campaign fundraiser, Larry has been directly involved in the success of many Y activities.

“Asking others to make a donation to the Y allows me to tell the Y story and tell people why I believe so strongly in the mission of the Y,” Larry said.

Larry’s commitment as a Y volunteer goes beyond the board room. He also volunteered to teach a 5:30 a.m. cycling class for 5 years. Teaching the class kept him healthy. Larry loved getting up early, the music and the members. “I’m a morning person, can’t sleep past 4:30 a.m., so I might as well get up and go!” Larry said.

Even though he no longer teaches, he is still a familiar face at the Marshall Family YMCA and loves seeing his many Y friends. Having watched the Marshall Family Y grow and thrive for years, he is proud to see that it has moved into a larger, 2-story location that benefits the entire Evans community.

His love of service is also demonstrated in his work as a Rotarian. Larry’s faith drives his belief in service over self.

“I’m always conscious of how I portray God. And, of course, that’s always my prayer: Let me do a good job today to express Your love for the world.”

Thank you, Larry, for your commitment to the Family Y and the great example that you set for others!
