Youth Basketball
Basketball was invented in 1891. While teaching at the International YMCA Training School, James Naismith was given the challenge of creating a game that could be played indoors during the cold winter months. Hanging simple peach baskets and using a soccer ball, Naismith created the game of basketball and wrote the first 13 rules of the game.
The Family Y of Greater Augusta’s Youth Basketball league is open to kids ages 2-14. Every child should participate in every game and should receive equal playing time, regardless of skill level.

Lil’ Hoopers is back with a new playbook!
Our basketball league for ages 3 and 4 has a fresh format this season. First, our Little Hoopers will team up with their volunteer coach for three practices to learn the basics and build their confidence. Then it’s game time: three games against other teams, with a picture day along the way!
The season runs January 23–March 13, 2027. Games will take place on Saturdays between 9:00 a.m. and noon. Each volunteer coach will select their team’s practice day and time.
Get ready for little dribbles, big smiles, and plenty of “Did you see that?!” moments. Let’s hoop!

U7 (Ages 5-6) Wilson 2027
Our U7 Basketball League builds on the fundamentals learned in Lil’ Hoopers, helping players continue to grow their skills and love for the game! Designed for ages 5–6, this league introduces team play in a fun, supportive environment that focuses on learning the basics of dribbling, passing, shooting, and defense.
The season begins with practices the week of January 11, and games start the week of January 25. Teams will practice once per week at a time set by their coach, and games will be held on Saturday mornings other days may vary depending on the size of the league. The season runs through March 27th at the Wilson Family YMCA.
