Youth Basketball

Basketball was invented in 1891. While teaching at the International YMCA Training School, James Naismith was given the challenge of creating a game that could be played indoors during the cold winter months. Hanging simple peach baskets and using a soccer ball, Naismith created the game of basketball and wrote the first 13 rules of the game.

The Family Y of Greater Augusta’s Youth Basketball league is open to kids ages 2-14. Every child should participate in every game and should receive equal playing time, regardless of skill level.

This is a skills and drills program. The players will learn the basics of basketball and classes will only be held on Saturdays at the session time that you register for.

Important 2024-2025 Youth Basketball Information

  • Registration
    • October 21st – December 1st
    • Late Registration (additional $15 late fee) December 2nd-8th
      • Age control Date is August 1st 2024
    • Coaches Meeting (Coaches Only) in the Sports Complex at The Wilson Family Y:
      • Week of December 9th at 6:30pm  
      • Practice
        • U7 – U15 begins the week of January 5th
          • Practice days and times are determined by the volunteer coach and will be held M-F between 5-8pm.
          • Jerseys will be handed out at your team’s last practice before your first game.
        • Iddy Bitty Basketball
          • Instruction will begin on January 25th at the time you signed up for; 9am, 10am, 11am, or 12pm. Instruction will be held in the youth gym.
        • Games
          • U7-U15 will play on either Tuesdays, Thursdays, or Saturdays. Other days may be included depending on the size of the league.

**Please note some games may be played at other locations depending on size of the league**

**Players may not be dropped off or left unattended during practice or games**
